One of my absolute favorite things to do the moment we step off the ship at Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay, is to snorkel. If you’ve ever wondered whether snorkeling here is worth it, trust me, it is. Between the calm lagoon, the hidden Disney surprises underwater, and the incredible marine life, it’s an experience I look forward to every single cruise.
Whether you’re a beginner, a nervous swimmer, or a seasoned snorkeler, here’s everything you need to know before diving in.
Snorkeling With Kids at Castaway Cay
Snorkeling is available for guests ages 5 and up, but if your little ones get nervous going into deeper water (like ours), Disney has the perfect solution: Oceaneer Club comes onto the island at Scuttle’s Cove.
This means:
Kids can have their own fun (they also serve lunch there - check with them to see when)
Parents can snorkel without worry.
Everyone gets the experience they want
We do this every time — it’s a win‑win.
Snorkel Gear: Rent or Bring Your Own?
You have two options:
1. Rent Gear on the Island
Ages 10+: $44
Ages 5–9: $25
You can rent at Gil’s Fins and Boats or Flippers and Floats, or reserve ahead in the Navigator App.

2. Bring Your Own Gear (My Recommendation!)
Here’s the best-kept secret: If you bring your own snorkel gear, snorkeling is FREE.
You still need to check in at the rental area to get a required life vest, but that’s it.
Why I always bring my own:
The rental flippers were uncomfortable.
The rental snorkel is an open snorkel; if water gets in, you inhale it.
My personal gear fits better, works better, and makes the whole experience more enjoyable.
Now I never cruise without my snorkel set in my suitcase. I have it linked here in my Amazon storefont with other cruise essentials, including kids gear as well.

What Snorkeling at Castaway Cay Is Really Like
Castaway Cay’s snorkeling lagoon is a 22‑acre enclosed area located at the Family Beach. It’s perfect for beginners because:
The water is calm
Lifeguards are always watching.
It’s easy to navigate.
Follow the Buoys
They guide you through the lagoon and mark the locations of:
Hidden Disney statues
Artificial reefs
Each visit, the statues can change, so you never know what magical surprise you’ll find underwater.
Marine Life You May See
Every snorkel trip is different, but we’ve seen:
Colorful tropical fish
Southern stingrays
Coral structures
A barracuda (epic moment!)
And yes, nurse sharks can be in the area; they’re harmless and usually shy.
A quick PSA: Please don’t touch the wildlife or coral. Coral is a living animal, and touching it can harm both you and the reef. We’re visitors in their home, let’s treat it with respect.
🦈 Let’s Talk About Sharks (Because Everyone Wonders and I am your resident Shark lady)
We’ve never seen a shark in the snorkeling lagoon, but it is the ocean, and marine life can wander in. Nurse sharks are the most common in the Bahamas and are incredibly gentle. Honestly, if you spot one, consider yourself lucky to be in their presence.
If you see something unexpected:
Stay calm
Don’t thrash
Remember: most marine animals are more afraid of you.
When I saw the barracuda, I simply surfaced, told Zach, and by the time I looked back down, it was gone. No threat, just an unforgettable moment I wish I had caught on my GoPro.
My Eco‑Friendly Snorkeling Essentials
I only use products that are safe for the ocean, especially coral reefs. Here’s what I pack:
Stream2Sea Mask Defog — lasted over an hour, no fogging - this is very helpful to avoid constantly stopping to clean your mask. We learned from our first trip.
Stream2Sea Leave‑In Conditioner — protects hair from saltwater and makes it easy to brush out.
Rip Tie Hair Ties — prevents tangles and is a perfect combo with Leave-In conditioner.
Stream2Sea Coral Care Sunscreen — the world’s first sunscreen proven to nourish coral reefs. I never leave without this! Knowing it helps our coral is a game-changer. If SPF 30 is not enough, they also have a stronger sunscreen that is reef safe.
Stream2Sea Foot & Hand Cream — perfect after saltwater dries out your skin
Stream2Sea Lip Balm — a must after snorkeling.
Stream2Sea Soothing Gel — for any sunburn surprises.
And yes, you can use code ODIEN24 to save on Stream2Sea products.
What I Wear to Snorkel
Depending on the time of year, the water can be chilly. I’ve learned from experience (and one very sunburned back) that this is the best setup:
Waterlust leggings (eco‑friendly and warm)
Long‑sleeve sun shirt - Waterlust also have these!
Comfortable swimsuit underneath, so once done, you can easily wear it
This combo keeps me warm, protected, and sunburn‑free.
Final Thoughts: Snorkeling at Castaway Cay Is a Must‑Do
Whether you’re a first‑time snorkeler or a seasoned ocean lover, Castaway Cay offers one of the most magical, beginner‑friendly snorkeling experiences you’ll find anywhere. Between the calm lagoon, the hidden Disney touches, and the incredible marine life, it’s something I look forward to every single cruise.
Bring your own gear, pack eco‑friendly essentials, and get ready for an underwater adventure you’ll never forget.
